Description
Tunupa volcano, which is located on a peninsula between two of the largest salt flats in Bolivia, the Uyuni Salt Flats and the Coipasa Salt Flats. These salt flats have variable sediment coverage and microbial populations, producing areas with darker and lighter tones on the surface.
Tunupa volcano is located in the central southern Altiplano, or plateau of the Andes, and rises up to 5.3 kilometers (3.3 miles) high. The volcano is a composite cone: a large, complex volcano that is often covered by lava flows, pyroclastic and mud deposits, and domes. Its last activity was 1.4 million years ago, and Tunupa is now considered dormant.
